CANCELED DUE TO COVID-19 – STAY SAFE, FRIENDS!

Jonathan Ng is making a homecoming of sorts and we’re excited to have him return to RDU Rent Party leading a band the night before Bull City Swingout starts!  Jonathan started swing dancing while at UNC and it didn’t take long for him to put together a swing band of made up of his fellow UNC jazz students (Blue House Quintet) and set up a twice monthly dance across from campus that drew fans from the wider local community.  After graduating, Jonathan moved to Seattle, then Brooklyn, and has been kicking ass and scoring gigs at dance events all over the US.  We’re excited to have him back in the Triangle to kick off an awesome weekend of dancing.

South Road Swing – November 7, 2019

Making their RDU Rent Party debut, South Road Swing is a brand new swing band focusing on playing music for swing dancers, made up entirely of jazz students from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Bandleader and trumpeter Renée McGee has put together this group, based on her own experiences as a dancer and as a musician playing for dancers, performing with bands such as the Jonathan Stout Orchestra and at events such as DCLX and Lindy Focus.

8 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. – dance in The Lindy Lab studio (the studio in the middle of the building at the back of the parking lot) at Triangle Dance Studio.

Chelsea Reed and the Fair Weather Five – July 11, 2019

Chelsea Reed returns to the RDU Rent Party stage on July 11, this time with her Fair Weather Five and she’ll kick off an exciting weekend of dancing in Durham, as the Bull City Swingout starts the following day!

Chelsea is a killer swing and blues vocalist who always brings a dynamic and swinging band of Philadelphia-based musicians to be a part of her Fair Weather crew.   Be prepared to laugh, dance, have awesome feels, and bring your comfy shoes because this band will keep the floor full!

Greg Ruby Quartet – January 24, 2019

We are excited to welcome Seattle guitarist and bandleader Greg Ruby to the Rent Party stage, who will be leading a quartet for our dancing feet!  Who is Greg Ruby, you ask?

Described as “Seattle’s premier hot guitarist,” by Earshot Jazz Magazine, his most recent record, Syncopated Classic was awarded the “Golden Ear Award” in the Northwest Recording of the Year category.

Greg plays at swing dances, concert halls and festivals including the French Quarter Festival, Lindy Focus, DjangoFest and the NW Balboa Festival. Greg’s most recent ensemble, the Greg Ruby 6 performs the compositions and arrangements of swing guitar legend Oscar Alemán.

Joining Greg will be special guest Dennis Lichtman from New York, whose reputation as a hot jazz clarinet and fiddle player precede him as he travels the world while continuing to lead New York’s preeminent hot jazz jam at Mona’s every Tuesday night as part of Mona’s Hot Four.

Tiki Night with Huzzah! February 1, 2018

Huzzah! We’re having Huzzah (with some members of now defunct local favorites Skeedaddle) perform at their very first Rent Party – we guarantee and night of swinging strings, silly vocals, and tiki-themed shenanigans.  Come dressed in your favorite beach attire – it will be cold outside, but tropical indoors!

Keenan McKenzie Album Sneak Peak – Forged In Rhythm – November 30, 2017

Come get an exclusive sneak peek/listen to Keenan McKenzie’s new album of original swing music!  Keenan is a Triangle jazz musician and swing dancer who has performed with bands like the Mint Julep Jazz Band, Michael Gamble and the Rhythm Serenaders, the Jonathan Stout Orchestra, and leads a swing band under his own name.   Keenan is releasing “Forged in Rhythm,” his debut album of original tunes, in December and will be performing them live with a band of ace musicians for your dancing pleasure at the Rent Party/Lindy Lab dance on November 30 – come hear these songs before anyone else does!

The lineup for this show is Keenan McKenzie (reeds), Lucian Cobb (trombone), Paul Rogers (trumpet), Chip Newton (guitar), Jim Crew (piano), Aaron Gross (bass), Stephen Coffman (drums), and Laura Windley (vocals).

Boilermaker Jazz Band – October 12, 2017

The incredible and legendary Boilermaker Jazz Band from Pittsburgh, PA is coming back on October 12 for another epic night of swingouts and melted faces.  We’ll be opening up studio 4 next door for overflow dance space!

Joshua Fialkoff – August 31, 2017

Joshua Fialkoff from Philadelphia is back on tour and making a stop at RDU Rent Party!  Come shake it on the dance floor with some New Orleans-style swing and blues music.

7 p.m. to 8 p.m. – Swing and the Blues – a music talk with Joshua Fialkoff leading the music and guest instructors Dan Repsch and Julie Brown leading the dancing!
What makes us want to dance the Lindy Hop vs Blues when we hear certain songs? With the collective dance and musical knowledge of Julie, Josh, and Dan we’ll explore the elements of jazz music and dancing, and why a song might make us choose one style of dance or the other.

8 p.m. to 11:00 p.m. – dance in The Lindy Lab back studio to Joshua Fialkoff and his band, plus out-of-town special guest DJ Dan Repsch!

Harlequin Jazz Band – July 27, 2017

All the way from Huntsville, Alabama, the Harlequin Jazz Band specialized in tongue-in-cheek covers of familiar tunes with brand new lyrics that will appeal to the special Lindy Hop nerd inside all of us.  We’re excited they are making their Rent Party debut and we were able to pick them up on tour!

Russ Wilson – May 25, 2017

Russ Wilson is bringing his Swingtet to RDU Rent Party – IT’S ALL ABOUT RUSS, Y’ALL, so the music will be BOSS and SWINGING with Russ at the drum kit and on vocals. He’s stopping by Rent Party on his way to perform at the Richmond Lindy Exchange, which you should all make plans to attend so you can get three nights and days of awesome dance music and a Memorial Day of rest to recover.
